Let’s be honest — we’ve all had that moment standing in front of the mirror, flexing just to see what’s going on with the arms.
Whether you’re chasing peak biceps that pop through your T-shirt sleeves or defined, toned arms that feel just as strong as they look — the right workout makes all the difference.
If you’re based in Glengormley or Newtownabbey and looking to upgrade your arm game, you’re in the right place. These four tried-and-true exercises are favourites here at MaxFit Gym, and they’ll help you build strong, shapely arms that do more than just look good.
Let’s dive in.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU TRAIN ARMS?
Quick tip before we get into the moves: you don’t need to crush your arms every day.
In fact, training arms directly 1–2 times per week — alongside your usual chest, back, or full-body sessions — is more than enough to see great results. They’re already working hard during compound lifts like rows, presses and pull-ups.
Here’s a solid place to start:
- 2–3 sets of 8–10 reps
- Around 60 seconds rest between sets
- The last rep should feel tough, but not impossible
And remember: progress comes from consistency and variety. Mix things up every few weeks to keep the gains coming.
1. BARBELL CURL (Bicep exercises)
A classic — and for good reason.
Stand tall with a barbell in hand, arms extended. Without using your shoulders or rocking your body, curl the bar toward your chest using just your biceps. Lower slowly with control.
💡 Pro tip from our coaches: Try the EZ curl bar if you find the straight bar uncomfortable on your wrists. It’s a small tweak that makes a big difference.
2. TRIANGLE PUSH-UP (Triceps)
This bodyweight gem fires up the back of your arms like few others.
Start in a plank position (drop to your knees if needed). Bring your hands together under your chest, forming a triangle with your thumbs and index fingers. Lower yourself down until your nose nearly touches your hands, then push back up.
✅ Want to spice it up? Slow down the tempo or pause at the bottom for an extra burn.
3. DUMBBELL HAMMER CURL (Biceps)
Palms facing each other, dumbbells in hand — this variation hits the biceps from a different angle and brings the forearms into the party.
You can curl both arms at once or alternate sides. Just make sure you’re not swinging. Keep it clean, controlled and focused.
This one’s great if your usual curls are feeling stale — or if you just want to look like you lift without even flexing.
4. CABLE ROPE TRICEP PRESSDOWN (Triceps)
This one’s a staple at MaxFit Gym — and for good reason. It isolates the triceps, offers consistent resistance, and just feels right when you get into the groove.
Head to the cable machine and attach the rope handle. Grab the rope with both hands, stand tall, and lock your elbows close to your sides. From there, press the rope down until your arms are fully extended. Pause and squeeze at the bottom before returning slowly to the start.
🔥 Form tip: Avoid letting your elbows drift forward. Keep them pinned to your ribs to really light up the triceps.
DON’T JUST TRAIN — TRANSFORM
Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been training for years, these four movements will help you build strong, sculpted arms that turn heads — and handle life better.
But remember — results don’t come from workouts alone. You need:
- A smart, structured training programme
- The right nutrition and fuel
- Rest and recovery
- And a plan that evolves with you
Trying to DIY your way through all that? It’s possible — but it’s also overwhelming.
That’s why we do things differently at MaxFit Gym.
