Bright Spot Fridays: Why We Focus on Celebrating Small Wins
Success requires motivation, and Bright Spot Fridays help you build and maintain that motivation. After over 15 years as a coach, I’ve learned that while choosing the right exercises matters, it’s your desire and consistency that make the biggest difference.
Motivation doesn’t just appear—it’s something we create through small victories. That’s exactly what Bright Spot Fridays are for: recognising and celebrating the little wins that keep us moving forward, one step at a time.
What We Know About Motivation:
- Success comes before motivation: You need to achieve small wins before you feel motivated to continue. Waiting for motivation before taking action often leads to inaction.
- Motivation needs to be maintained: Ongoing success is essential for keeping motivation alive. That’s why regular reflection on your progress is so important—it fuels your drive to keep going.
- We often overlook our successes: We tend to be our own worst critics, which makes it hard to see the progress we’re making. Bright Spot Fridays help us pause and acknowledge the good, even when it feels like we haven’t done enough.
Focusing on Personal Progress
At our gym, we emphasize personal growth over comparison. This is why we have a PR (personal record) board in the gym and why clients track their progress in our WhatsApp group. Both tools are designed to focus on individual achievements rather than competing with others.
Bright Spot Fridays take this a step further by encouraging everyone to reflect on the positive moments from the week. These “bright spots” don’t have to be monumental wins—they can be any small victory that contributes to your fitness, health, or overall well-being.
Maybe you hit a new PR in the gym, or maybe you stuck to a new habit like drinking more water or walking daily. These small victories are what fuel long-term success, and they deserve to be recognised.
Building Gratitude as a Practice
Gratitude isn’t something that comes naturally for most people—it’s a skill that needs to be developed, just like physical fitness. That’s why we call it a practice: the more you do it, the easier it becomes. You may not feel like doing it at first, but afterward, you’ll always feel better for having taken the time to reflect.
Our Bright Spot Fridays are a weekly gratitude practice. In our Maxfit Members group, we all take a moment to share something positive from the week. These “bright spots” might be related to your workouts, but they don’t have to be. For example, maybe you meal-prepped healthy meals for the entire week, or you got out for a walk every morning.
Finding Your Bright Spot
Your Bright Spot can be any positive step you took, no matter how small. It could be as simple as making it to the gym when you didn’t feel like it, sticking to your hydration goals, or getting better sleep. The important thing is to recognise and celebrate any progress you’ve made.
At first, you might feel hesitant to share. You might think, “Does anyone really care?” or “My win isn’t big enough.” But remember, this is a community of people who are here to support each other. Your Bright Spot, no matter how small, can inspire others to reflect on their own victories.
Share Your Bright Spot
To get things started, I’ll share my Bright Spot for the week. I encourage you to follow by sharing one thing that went well for you. It doesn’t have to be big—just something small that improved your fitness, health, or overall well-being.
So, what did you accomplish this week? Did you eat healthier meals, stick to a new workout routine, or do something to improve your mental health? Share your Bright Spot in the MaxFit Members Facebook Group.
We’re all on this journey together, and this is a space where you can feel safe and comfortable sharing your wins. Let’s take time to reflect on our successes and head into the weekend with positivity and gratitude!
